Taditional rural gardens in North-West part of Croatia

Sažetak
Traditional rural garden is an integral part of any region’s cultural heritage. Climatic conditions and area relief influence it, so traditional rural gardens differ depending on geographic region. The aim of this paper was to find out which are the most used plant species in traditional rural gardens in North-West part of Croatia. Data were taken from gardens in Donja Stubica (Krapinsko-Zagorska County) and Ivanja Reka (Zagreb City Area). Donja Stubica traditional gardens were more preserved and had more plant species. The traditional architecture was accompanied with numerous perennials and annual flowering species, wild and utilitarian plants (fruit-trees, medicinal and aromatic plants); the garden was fenced by hedge or wattle fence. With its conception, traditional rural garden resembles natural habitats and contributes to restoration of natural balance and biodiversity conservation. The loss of traditional garden appearance was obvious at Ivanja Reka area.
