Finding Yourself: The Hutsul Identity In Liuba-Paraskevia Strynadiuk’s Prose

Sažetak
The article considers the expression of modern Hutsul identity in Ukrainian literature – a collection of prose by Liuba-Paraskeviia Strynadiuk. This tradition was established in the early 20th century and it continues to develop. It comprehends the Hutsul region as a category of culture, a semiotic object and a holistic space. The Hutsul world is told from within; it seems to create itself in the process of self-reflection. A comprehensive view of the region is formed from memorable fragments. This idea is flexible and malleable, but it is built around the core concepts: tradition, mentality, cultural landscape of the region. The author forms her own identity by deconstructing the Hutsul world, denying established social roles and asserting her identity through family, social and gender conflicts and through connection with relatives and the mountain area.
