Sažetak
Strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) and laurel (Laurus nobilis L.) are two very important species of our Mediterranean forests. They make up an integral part of forest vegetation in the Eu-Mediterranean region, and partly in the warmer part of the sub-Mediterranean vegetative belt. Their importance as indigenous species, in general, represents a generally accepted feature of biological diversity and environmental stability of the forest vegetation they are an integral part of.
However, in the economic and forest land reclamation sense, they are very much neglected. Both species are forest fruit trees; medicinal and melliferous species, which have been gastronomically recognized species for a long time but are very sporadically used today. Their potential role in agroforestry and rural development have not been exploited, and they have not been used either as karst reclamation species. Also, their aesthetic beauty has not even been remotely recognized, and therefore, they have not been used for horticultural and landscaping purposes. As indigenous species, how Rosavec et al. (2005) have claimed, they have certain advantages over the allochthonous species. We are familiar with their ecological requirements (i.e., the type of soil, climatic factors, water, light, etc.). We are also familiar with their biological properties and origin. With allochthonous species, some of these factors can be limiting for growth and development, especially during the latter phase of plant growth.
