Sažetak

Competitive anxiety and self-confidence significantly affect the quality of athletic performance (11, 46), therefore it is important to identify factors that contribute to higher level of those traits among athletes. The aim of the study was to determine how different forms of cognitive styles and perfectionism are related to competitive anxiety and self-confidence in athletes. The study involved 193 athletes (age range 18-40 years) who play volleyball (n = 94) or water polo (n = 99). Study participants completed the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (27), the Optimism-Pessimism Scale (31) and the Multidimensional Inventory of Perfectionism in Sport (40).
As expected, cognitive and somatic anxiety are negatively correlated with self-confidence and optimism, and positively correlated with pessimism and maladaptive perfectionism. In contrast, self confidence is positively correlated with optimism and negatively correlated with pessimism and maladaptive perfectionism. Cognitive styles and perfectionism explain 40% of variance of cognitive
anxiety, 29% of variance of somatic anxiety, and 31% of variance of athlete’s self-confidence. According to the results, in order to reduce cognitive anxiety and increase self-confidence in athletes, it is
important to encourage optimism and to reduce pessimism and maladaptive perfectionism. Reduction of the level of maladaptive perfectionism is especially important among athletes in whom somatic anxiety interferes with the quality of sports performance.
