THE CONTRIBUTION TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF ARTHROPODS OF MEDICAL IMPORTANCE IN THE COASTAL AREA OF THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA

Sažetak
The paper presents biological characteristics of arthropods of medical importance - biological vectors of contagious diseases. Biological vectors in the coastal area in Croatia are mosquitos (Anopheles): sand flies (Phlebotomus); ticks (generas: Ixodes, Dermacentor and Rhipicephalus) and fleas (Xenopsylla). All these arthropods of medical importance are described on the basis of the reported transmissive diseases in the 1987-1996 period. The occurrence of transmissive diseases is mostly sporadic in contrast to autochthonous malaria cases, which haven’t been recorded in Croatia since 1958. The distribution of transmissive diseases shows that range of biological vectors do not coincide with areas of the distribution of diseases. It could be assumed that there are some factors not entirely understood defining the existence of the infection in ecological niches of the diseases and incidence in humans. Medically important fauna of Croatia is not very well explored regarding the generas, biological and ecological characteristics and distribution, so that future research is suggested.
