Nuclear Security
Gordana Lacković
Sažetak
It would be irresponsible to speak of modern society and disregard the nuclear issue. Nuclear energy, technology and nuclear security have two-fold character: military, whose beginnings are connected with the Manhattan project, and civil, primarily concentrating on the production of cheap energy and its environmental impact. On one hand, the military character resulted in arms race, which evolved from quantity to quality race. It has become a technological race. The highlight was the SDI, which was partially aimed at forcing former USSR into a "technological game", in which the winner was known in advance, and consequently, destroy the rival on the "global stage". On the other hand, the 1970s saw two oil crises and the global warning that the era of welfare had come to its end. Nuclear option emerged as one of alternative solutions. It was believed that the solution lies with it, that it would secure cheap, available and safe energy and technology. The events that ensued denied all expectations. Nuclear catastrophes became frequent facts. The expectations never realised - ecologically acceptable energy and technology. Instead, we are facing a "two-faced nightmare": on one hand, the problem of deposing and storing radio-active waste and on the other, the co-called "Chinese syndrome", a complete melting of radioactive core. There is no solution to either of these problems.
