Sažetak

Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), one of the most important perennial forage legumes, may be grown in pure stands or in mixture with grasses and utilized for nutrition of livestock as green forage, hay and silage. The objectives of this work were to evaluate variability of important morpho-agronomic traits of 16 red clover populations/cultivars of domestic and foreign origin, to determine correlations between studied traits, and to identify possible parent component for a potential cultivar. Investigation was conducted in Osijek for two years (2004 and 2005) and a field trial was arranged according to the randomized block design in three replications. The following morpho-agronomic traits were analyzed: yields of green mass, dry matter and seed, dry matter content, plant height, days to flowering and survival. Investigated red clover populations/cultivars significantly varied in all studied traits. Significantly positive correlation was found between yields of green mass and dry matter, plant height and yields, dry matter content with yields of dry matter and seed. With respect to high yields and favourable performance populations PCD-6, PCD-7, PCD-2 and PCD-5 represent possible parent component for a potential cultivar. Due to high yields of green mass and dry matter (Temara) and expressed persistence (Milvus) German cultivars might be an interesting germplasm for further breeding activities.
