Sažetak

The State Archives in Split preserves the archival fonds HR-DAST-44 District (as a commercial) Court in Split (1806) 1863/1945 [1954], a valuable source for studying the history of trade in the district of Split in the 2nd half of the 19th century and the 1st half of the 20th century. At the beginning of the District (as commercial) Court’s operation, the district of Split included 12 districts: Brač, Hvar, Imotski, Makarska, Metković, Omiš, Sinj, Split, Trogir, Vis, Vrgorac and Vrlika. At that time, it was not considered necessary to establish special commercial, promissory note, and maritime courts, so these operated within the framework of district courts. The article therefore presents the historical framework and scope of the District (as a commercial) Court in Split from the beginning to the end of its operation (1807– 1945) and provides a detailed description of the archival fonds HR-DAST-44.Following this, on a small sample, using the example of the oldest register of independent companies A I (1863 – 1906), a micro picture of the state of independent trading companies in the district of Split in the 2nd half of the 19th century is presented. This book has never been listed or indexed before, and it contains entries of standalone (independent) companies: grocery, wine, oil, flour, leather, etc., from1863 to 1906 in the district of Split. Therefore, an analytical list of all companies registered in that book was created, and it served as a basis for making the statistics of headquarters and business activities of companies, both in general and according to municipalities. The aim of this paper is to point out to the readers the historiographical importance and value of the mentioned archival fonds, to awaken the curiosity of future researchers and to enrich the previous understandings about the history of trade, especially about the beginnings of trading companies’ activities in the district of Split, in this case in the 2nd half of the 19th century.
