Sažetak

Modern states prevent the spread of extremism by respecting the ‎principles of separation of governmental powers, political representation, ‎respect for the law, guaranteeing human rights, protection‎ of vulnerable minority groups, media freedom and civil‎ association. However, since the suppression of extremism in free‎ societies is an extremely complex process, state authorities need ‎constant help from the civil sector in order to be able to successfully ‎recognize and then effectively suppress extremism, which ‎is proving to be an increasing challenge for liberal democracies.‎ Although the suppression of extremism is primarily the task of the‎ state and its institutions, the paper shows that citizens organized ‎through civil society play an indispensable role in this process.‎
