Sažetak
Modern states prevent the spread of extremism by respecting the principles of separation of governmental powers, political representation, respect for the law, guaranteeing human rights, protection of vulnerable minority groups, media freedom and civil association. However, since the suppression of extremism in free societies is an extremely complex process, state authorities need constant help from the civil sector in order to be able to successfully recognize and then effectively suppress extremism, which is proving to be an increasing challenge for liberal democracies. Although the suppression of extremism is primarily the task of the state and its institutions, the paper shows that citizens organized through civil society play an indispensable role in this process.
