Abstract

The paper researches the geopolitical and geostrategic importance‎of the Crimean Peninsula, its annexation by the Russian Federation‎in 2014, and its current significance at the time of the implementation‎of a military operation in Ukraine in 2022. Causal ‎relations are analysed with different views into certain contextual‎ environments. The paper is divided into four parts. The first part‎ contains a theoretical analysis of geopolitics, geostrategy (and‎ geoeconomics), and its application to the Crimean Peninsula. The‎ second part researches the past of Crimean Peninsula through ‎key historical events. The third part describes the 2014 events in Crimea, and in the last part the paper studies the importance of ‎Crimea in the current conflict in Ukraine, which (re)escalated on ‎February 24, 2022.‎
