Abstract

The paper presents an e-course in technical English developed at the engineering faculty of the University of Zagreb, with a special focus on e-tests and the advantages of doing e-tests within an e-course. A survey was conducted with the aim to determine students’ attitudes towards the content offered in the e-course – i.e., additional online assignments to practise the material, being tested with an e-test at the end of the semester, and a pilot e-test – as well as to collect and analyse students’ feedback on their experiences with writing e-tests. The paper compares the students’ e-test results with the results obtained by a traditional pencil-and-paper test done a year earlier. The results of the study show that the students have a positive attitude towards e-evaluations and other activities offered in the e-course, which are all a form of formative assessment. The feedback students received after completing the additional assignments and the pilot e-test helped them become aware of the gap between their current knowledge and skills and the knowledge and skills needed to successfully complete the e-test.
