A Contribution to the Theory of Verse

Sažetak

Verse is treated as a fundamental and specific feature of poetry. The article highlights the following characteristics of verse language: two-dimensionality (horizontal and vertical axes), the network form of a poetic text, hierarchy. The role of syllables in the construction of rhythm and versification systems, the ratio of rhythmic units (feet) and language units (words) are also analyzed. Conclusively, the argument addresses the relationship between chorea and iamb in Croatian poetry and discusses metametric meanings of verses.
