Development of human potential as guarantee of success of the “Respect the city” project in Dubrovnik

Abstract
Dubrovnik, as one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean and
beyond, takes pride in its unique cultural and natural heritage. Behind the beauty of this
city and the success of the tourist destination are the people crucial for its sustainable development. The paper analyses the importance of the local population as the core of the
tourist destination and their role in preserving Dubrovnik’s cultural and natural heritage,
as well as devising and implementing sustainable tourism programs. Using an integrated
approach that involves science, education, and practice, the article examines how experts
shape the fate of Dubrovnik as a sustainable destination and what their role will be in the
future.
