Abstract

This paper analyzes the Dubravko Jelčićs’ novel The Fear. Dealing with the stylistic and structural analysis of this novel, we will notice a number of coincidences between the themes the author deals with, motifs and applied stylistic procedures (for example: the structure of the novel and the motif of mirror, multiple reflections, playing with focalization). In addition, Jelčićs’ deep preoccupation are philosophy of language, relationship between the expressible and the inexpressible; spoken and unspoken; words and silence, stillness. Jelčić, therefore, deals with dichotomies, trying to find a way to overcome them. In the novel The Fear, the relationship between the personal and social system, the relationship between „I“ and „me“ (H. Mead), as well as the relationship with otherness, is emphasized and analyzed. The space of the border, as can be seen from the analysis, is a place of meeting, but also is a place of fear and gaps (J. Kristeva). One of Jelčićs’ key preoccupations is the thematization, on a number of levels, the phenomenon of combining the seemingly incompatible (concordia discors).
