Pokrinokat at the Turn of the Century

Sažetak
During the 1793 carnival a Croatian adaptation titled Pokrinokat, based on a recent
French adaptation of the medieval farce about the lawyer Patelin, was performed in the
Gozze family palace in Dubrovnik. Miho Sorkočević (under the pseudonym Proto Miho
Gružanin), as a prominent representative of Dubrovnik’s intellectual elite at the end of the
18th century, brought this canonical work of world dramatic literature, a masterpiece of the
farce genre, into the Croatian literary and theatrical culture. The staging of Pokrinokat was
also the last Croatian theatrical performance before the fall of the Republic, whose cultural
and performance context reveals certain specificities of theatrical life in Dubrovnik at the
turn of the century. In the first part of the paper, we will examine the relationship between
«non-theatrical« discourse and theatrical events of that period using the collection of sermons
Besjede duhovne by B. Zuzorić as an example. In the second part we will analyze
the relationship of Sorkočević’s translation/adaptation according to the French model from
the beginning of the 18th century
