Sažetak

Polyodaspis ruficornis is a species widely distributed in the Palearctic and Oriental regions. Larvae of this species are extremely polyphagous, preferring foods rich in proteins. They develop as saprophages, caprophages, phytophages, and parasites in the preimaginal stages of insects. In the literature, the species is also mentioned as a pest of walnut fruit. The larvae of this fly develop in the green shell (exocarp) of the walnut fruit. As a result of the feeding of the larvae, the green lupine of the walnut fruit becomes soft, due to the release of tannin, turns black over time, and sticks to the shell of the walnut, from which it is difficult to separate. Damage to walnut fruits is
very similar to damage caused by the larvae of the walnut husk fly Rhagoletis completa. Through monitoring carried out during August and September 2023, the infection of walnut fruits by P. ruficornis was determined in numerous localities in the municipalities of Žepče, Kiseljak, Prozor-Rama, Mostar, Čitluk, and Neum. Depending on the locality, the intensity of infection ranged from 3% in the locality of Ripci (Prozor-Rama) to 32% in the locality of Donja Papratnica (Žepče). The pest is often found in walnut fruits together with the larvae of the codling moth Cydia pomonella, but also in fruits that were not visibly attacked by another pest or disease agent.
