Sažetak
The path to unity cannot be based exclusively on the acceptance of diversity. True inclusion entails the culture of engaging and focusing on a person with all of
their characteristics, with the goal of developing the child’s full potential, both in the
individual and social sphere. The idea of inclusion is a driving force toward equal educational opportunities for all children, neurotypical children and children with special
educational needs alike. Are fear and a lack of knowledge actually what is behind the
segregation of children? In this paper, we will present a case study conducted with a
child who has a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and attends a sports-oriented
programme at the kindergarten Palunko in Brod-Posavina county. This programme has
a contemporary and integrated approach to learning which allows children to circulate
through the rooms according to their own preference; a sports hall, the living room
and the enclosed outdoor sports area of the kindergarten. The child is a part of a
mixed aged group (children aged 4- 6 years old) with a daily attendance of around 20
children. The purpose of this study is to explore the benefits of integrating movement
in educational processes with children with special educational needs. By observing
the child using pedagogical documentation (including videos and photos of the children during activities, interpretation, notes) and by interviewing the child’s personal
assistant and parent, we have confirmed progress within different areas of development. The documentation was used to determine the developmental progress that
had an impact on the overall development of the child. Integrating movement in the
educational process resulted in an inclusive surrounding, the feeling of belonging to
the group, positive changes in behaviour, receptive language, care management, social interaction as well as development in fine and gross motor skills. This research
underlines the importance of integrating movement in educational processes for both
neurotypical children and children with special educational needs.
