Sažetak

In "Lost Homeland" ("Izgubljeni zavičaj", 1980), Ante Babaja places the film world in a specifically designed virtual space of memory, thinking of it as a reflection that occurs in the consciousness of the protagonist at the moment of facing transience. This reflection produces virtual film images that go beyond the concept of pure memory and instead confirm the permanent interweaving of the past with the present, that is, the circularity and inseparability of different time layers. The film opens itself up to virtuality as a reflection of what it contains within itself, i.e. the present, placing its images in a dimension in which linear time is canceled. In the film, with strategies comparable to those of Marcel Proust's cycle of novels "In Search of Lost Time" (1913–27) and Alain Resnais's film "Providence" (1977) inspired by it, the act of remembering is established as the central representational paradigm and is constructed as involuntary, an unconscious and sensory process. Babaja’s "Lost Homeland", to a greater extent than Novak's pseudo-autobiographical prose of the same name, modernistically integrates the relationship between the sensory and the mental with the aim of realizing the complete receptive openness of an artistic form that always produces new meanings. Recollection-images, as a virtuality inserted into the diegetic world of the film, enable the direct confrontation of the layers of the past and the present, the forms of the internal and external, as well as canceling the distance between them, making their distinction redundant. Relying on haptic visuality, which with the logic of synesthesia makes the sense of sight tactile, Babaja’s "Lost Homeland" turns the entire film into a scene of recollection as a feeling, confirming the permanent marking of the mental by the sensory.
