Sažetak
The paper analyses the cultural, political and socio-economic factors that prompted Emperor Francis Joseph to stay in Dubrovnik for five days from the end of April to the beginning of May 1875. Until that moment, the territory of the former Republic of Dubrovnik was experiencing the roots of political, administrative and economic changes. It was in the period of the 1860s that Dubrovnik would become a more notable urban environment that would attract the attention of the Viennese nobility and the intellectual elite of that time. This was the first and only visit of emperor Francis Joseph to Dubrovnik during his long reign. During his five-day stay in the area of Dubrovnik and its immediate surroundings, the emperor aimed to familiarize himself with Dubrovnik’s traditions and customs, also the existential difficulties that plagued the local population, as well as to send the message of a good ruler who cares for the interests of his subjects with his presence. Therefore, the paper will show how Dubrovnik’s heritage encouraged Emperor Francis Joseph to stay in the city for five days and what kind of reflections his stay caused. It will be presented how the pomp of the events of 1875 influenced the complete visual change of the city, which was not noticeable since the time of the existence of the Republic of Dubrovnik.
