Sažetak
This paper discusses Herbert Marcuse’s critical theory of technology. Positioned within the intellectual milieu of the Frankfurt School, Marcuse emerges as an early proponent, acknowledging technology as a driver of history. Mindful of the pervasive dominance of technological rationality over alternative forms of reason and resistance, Marcuse steadfastly confronts technological determinism. Instead of succumbing to this deterministic outlook, he elucidates how the omnipotent sway of technology is at the same time a key to another dimension. Hence, this paper examines Marcuse’s critique of technological rationality. Even today, Marcuse’s critique keeps its acuity, providing valuable insights to contemporary discussions on the technology’s all-encompassing influence. Thus, the revaluation of Marcuse’s criticism of technology has not only academic significance but also practical relevance for current discussions and concerns surrounding the profound impact of technology on society.
