Abstract
The production of sour cherries (Prunus cerasus L.) in the Republic of Croatia is dominated by the Oblačinska' variety, which is mainly intended for industrial processing. The aim of the study was to determine the growth, yield and pomological characteristics of 'Oblačinska višnja' and other varieties ('Debrecen Botermo', 'Erdy Botermo', 'Uifehertska', 'Šumadinka' and 'Favorit') and to conduct a comparative analysis of the investigated characteristics between them. These varieties have different uses, from the possibility of use in industrial processing to fresh consumption. The pomological characteristics of sour cherry were revealed by analysing fruit and seed mass, yield, yield efficiency (YE) and boot cross-sectional area (TCSA). The studies were carried out in three growing seasons (2022, 2023 and 2024). The highest cumulative yield per hectare was recorded for the varieties 'Šumadinka' (31.3 t/ha) and 'Oblačinska' (29.8 t/ha), the lowest for 'Debrecen Botermo' (4.7 t/ha) and 'Favorit' (8.2 t/ha). The variety 'Erdy Botermo' had the highest average fruit mass (7.03 g), and the lowest was 'Oblačinska' (3.86 g). By observing the flowering phenology, the earliest start of flowering was determined for the variety 'Erdy Botermo' and the latest for the variety 'Oblačinska'. The results of the study show that the pomological characteristics of sour cherries are significantly influenced not only by the year of production and climatic factors, but also by the variety. This type of research shows how important it is to observe the characteristics of selected varieties over several years in order to gain a more comprehensive insight into their potential. The results obtained can help growers to select varieties that maximise productivity and fruit quality. The aim of the study was to determine the vegetative growth and yield of 'Oblačinska' sour cherry, the predominant variety in production, and five new varieties over three years under the agro-ecological conditions of Slavonia.
