Abstract

While reading and rereading Krste Misirkov’s Za makedonckite raboti (‘On
Macedonian Matters’, Liberarnij klub, Sofija, 1903), which represents the basis of
the Macedonian national and linguistic emancipation during the 20th century, I
became aware of the fact that Misirkov’s argumentation over and over relies on
Vatroslav Jagić’s work, as well as the work of Jan Baudouin de Courtenay, Francè
Miklošič and others. There are implications that Misirkov also had personal encounters
with de Courtenay, but we do not know for meetings with the others,
including with Jagić. Misirkov advocated Jagić’s ideas, according to my opinion, for
two reasons: Jagić was at that time an exceptionally respected authority of Slavic
studies, especially of South Slavic studies, and he was the author of the “Macedonian
theory of the origin of Church Slavonic”. But Jagić also advocates the thesis
that Slavic dialects constitute “pieces” of the Slavic speech continuum. This thesis,
in particular, triggered Misirkov to conclude that the Macedonian dialects and
the Macedonian language as a diasystem are independent and not part of other
Slavic languages. In this contribution, I argue that Jagić’s views not only concern
the study of Bulgarian and Croatian, but they also represent a considerable significance
for the study of Macedonian.
