Abstract

The aim of this paper is to critically approach the content of the programmatic texts of the Croatioan national revival, with the goal of researching the differences between their aesthetic and ideological contexts. Specificially, it seeks to discern what in the programmatic writings of the Croatian political and literary revival pertained to contemporary historical-political issues, and what related to aesthetic-poetic, i. e. literary concerns. The research of the programmatic texts of the Illyrian movement in the context of the relationship between aesthetics and ideology focuses on the period from 1815, with the publication of Antun Mihanović’s article “Reč domovini od Hasnovitosti pisanja vu
Domorodnom jeziku’’, published in Vienna, up until 1865, with Adolfo Veber Tkalčević’s article “Najnoviji pojavi našeg pjesničtva’’ published in Književnik. Based on the analysis of the content of the programmatic texts of the Croatian national revival in the context of the contrast between aesthetics and ideological themes, it can be concluded that the leading Croatian intelligentsia of a large part of the 19th century, in addition to being sensitive to contemporary historical and political issues, dedicated a great deal of its struggle to the issue of national literature. This highlights an awareness of the importance of modern domestic literature as a foundation for national culture.
