Abstract

Although there are many television genres, reality shows have not seen a decline in popularity for decades, quite the opposite. Clarifying this phenomenon is one of the goals of this paper. The research questions aimed for an explanation of the popularity of reality shows, that is, the reasons why viewers
consume content that involves observing other people who are in various life situations placed in a specific television context and the rules of a particular show. The research emphasis is on generation Z and determining their reasons for consuming the aforementioned television content. For the purposes of this work, two examples were chosen - Survivor and Mr. Perfect. The television
format of reality shows in Croatia has changed significantly since the first season of Big Brother was shown on RTL Television, and has evolved in new directions and determinants, from the duration to the tasks the contestants deal with. The research was conducted through a survey questionnaire distributed to members of generation Z. The results revealed the attitudes of generation Z as
a specific audience of reality content, as well as their reasons for watching the aforementioned shows. Although the research showed that the attitude of generation Z towards reality shows is negative, it is still one of the most watched television genres.
