Translating War Trauma in Šnajder's Zmijin Svlak, or on Emotional Barriers in the Polish Reception of Croatian War Literature

Sažetak
The paper analyzes the interlingual translation of Šnajder’s Zmijin svlak and the Polish theatrical and critical reception of two performances based on it. The first, much more significant was staged at the Teatr Rozmaitości in Warsaw, while the second, a student project, was performed at the Stowarzyszenie Teatralne »Łaźnia« in Kraków. Research has shown that emotional barriers exist in the Polish reception of Zmijin svlak, leading to its moderate reception by critics and audiences. These barriers arise from differences in traumatic experiences, the recipient’s horizons of expectation, socio-political realities, and the poetics and thematic concerns of the play itself, as well as its drama and theatre translation.
