Abstract

This paper presents a diplomatic edition of two dialogues taken from the second
of Giovanni Obrovaz’s ten handwritten notebooks. These texts, like the majority
of his works, are recorded in the istriot dialect, specifically the Valle d’Istria-Bale
variant. This edition presents them alongside an italian translation for improved
understanding. Additionally, explanatory notes are included to elucidate the
specific dialect features and provide context. This approach, inspired by Dante
Isella’s concept of entering the “writer’s workshop”, aims to make the dialogues
accessible to a wider audience while remaining faithful to the original language.
The translation adheres closely to the source material, with minimal interventions
limited to punctuation adjustments for clarity, capitalization corrections, and the
proper use of quotation marks, accents, and apostrophes. These changes prioritize
readability for non-specialists. Finally, a brief key at the end of the introduction
outlines the symbols and editorial criteria employed in the explanatory notes for
the Obrovazian texts.
