CRIKVENICA BUILDINGS: THE CONTRIBUTION TO THE TRADITIONAL MASONRY
Tea Jerić Matejčić
Sažetak
Crikvenica is usually regarded as a modern seaside resort with beautiful beaches, bars, hotels, boats and shady gardens. Nobody ever considered her to be of any interest as far as her past is concerned. Of course there was the old church after which the town itself has been named, because «crikva» in the old croat language means «church» therefore CRIKVENICA – SMALL CHURCH. The Pauline monastery attached to the church dates from 1412. The oldest hotel buildings are from 1895 and 1905. At the end of the 19 century there were some 50 beautiful one and two story houses built with beautiful facades which housed tourists. But where did live the people before? How did their houses look? We have found these dwellings beneath the modern houses of today. They are well hidden because they have been originally built using the slope of the hill in the middle of the town, which was also the original settlement nearest to the source of water. And how did the people build? Using the rocks which were all around them. The slope was cut on the northern side which than became a wall, and two additional walls left and right formed a quadrangle usually 4 x 4. The sunny side was provided with the entrance door on the left which opened into the inside. Immediately on the left of the door there was an open fireplace on the earthen floor. No chimney and no windows were necessary, the smoke circulated through the very simple roof made of straw or willowy rods intertwined. Rarely the roof was covered with stone plates, or ecceptionaly with tiles. Such simple dwellings have their roots far back in history, and in the country where the stone reigns, it was very natural, that such a type of building, survived and arrived to the 19 century almost intact. After the 1848 revolution, but not directly because of it, things changed considerably, people started to go to work in far places, brought home the earned money, and started to build modern houses on the old dwelling. Most times, they left the original building intact, only roofs never survived which is natural, but houses spread forward into the former courtyards, changed directions of the facades, embellished them, and hid themselves underneath, almost forever. Such as they originally are, they have sheltered large families, and most of all, they kept the fire going which of course has been always the most important thing of all. Although, we today, judge them by our standards as extremely primitive and poor, it was never so, for those who built them.
