Abstract

The author provides an overview of the destruction suffered by the churches of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Croatia during and after the War in Croatia (1991 — 1995). The text explores the various ways in which these churches were damaged and identifies the perpetrators – most of whom remain unknown to this day. It focuses on churches that were either completely destroyed or severely damaged. The majority of the destruction occurred in the Pakrac — Slavonia Diocese, particularly in the Brod and Nova Gradiška areas. The smallest number of damaged or destroyed churches was recorded in the Zahumlje — Herzegovina Diocese and the Zagreb — Ljubljana Metropolitanate. Some of the buildings have since been restored. Out of 84 churches damaged in the last war, 42 (50%) have never been rebuilt. The text concludes with statistical data on the damaged churches, categorized by the degree of destruction and geographic location.
