Abstract

In 2021 and 2022, three world award-winning films highlight the global Mediterranean, but far from the migration tragedy and postcard clichés: Luzzu (Sundance Festival, best actor), Murina (Cannes, golden camera, Hamptons Festival, first prize, Gotham Independent Film, best actress), Triangle of Sadness (Cannes, The Golden Palm, European Film Awards). The protagonists of these films confront the uneven laws that govern ultraliberal society, the globalized market, and the patriarchal family—laws that suddenly find their limits by being overturned. Strictly speaking, however, these films have no definitive conclusion; instead, they compel viewers to reconsider ethical dilemmas and imagine the consequences of personal choices. They initiate an intersectional reflection on contemporary power asymmetries (on the levels of social, ethnic, and gender identity), within which Mediterranean fishing culture offers an anthropological framework.
