Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches in the Evaluation of Discrete Event Simulation Tools

Sažetak

In this research, SimPy, a Python library for discrete event simulation, and the Arena tool were analyzed with the aim of evaluating and comparing their performance and characteristics in the context of discrete event simulation. The paper proposes expanding the number and types of criteria for evaluating and comparing discrete event simulation tools, with a methodological enhancement of qualitative assessment through the application of SWOT analysis. A comparative quantitative analysis was conducted based on the simulation of a simple educational process, while the qualitative assessment was based on an expanded set of evaluation criteria. In addition to the usual evaluation criteria, the qualitative research also introduced evaluation dimensions from the DeLone and McLean Information Systems Success Model. This model was used to evaluate the tools according to key quality dimensions: system quality, information quality, and service quality. Although the study presents a quantitative assessment, the main focus is on the qualitative analysis. A SWOT analysis was applied to the assessed quality dimensions to provide a deeper understanding of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the application of the analyzed simulation tools. The results indicate that both tools have specific advantages, depending on the nature of the project and user needs. While SimPy offers greater flexibility and customization, Arena has proven to be more efficient for faster modeling. The conclusion of the study indicates that the choice of simulation tool is conditioned by the specifics of the project, and that the introduction of quality dimensions from the DeLone and McLean model can significantly improve the decision-making process when selecting a simulation tool. This approach enables a more accurate evaluation of the tools, which can lead to greater success in their application.
