Abstract

This paper aims to examine the representation of Montenegro
in the book A Month on Foot, a travel account from
Korčula to Cetinje written by Petar Kuničić (1862–1940), a
Croatian teacher, translator, and writer. Kuničić, the author
of numerous articles published under his real name or various
pseudonyms, embarked on a walking journey through
the Dalmatian regions in 1896, accompanied by a friend,
including Montenegro in their itinerary. Upon his return,
he published his travel notes in the periodical Narodni list
in 1897, which were later compiled into a monograph. This
article seeks to analyse the motivations behind Kuničić’s
journey, the depiction of the areas of present-day Montenegro
as portrayed in his travel diary, as well as the historical,
political, and cultural factors that influenced his representation
of this country and its people. The analysis focuses
on Kuničić’s interpretation of regional dynamics and cultural
interactions, placing it within the historical and political
context of the time.
