Area Distortions in the Normal and Transverse Mercator Projection

Sažetak
The article deals with area distortions in conformal cylindrical projections. For this purpose, the normal and transverse Mercator projection of the sphere, the Gauss-Krüger projection and the transverse Mercator projection of the ellipsoid for Croatia, i.e. HTRS96/TM, are researched. It is shown that the expressions for the local scale factors of length and area for all these projections are of the same form, it is only necessary to note what the individual symbols refer to. This means that all four projections are related and that we can study them in this way. For each projection, one example of the distribution of distortions was selected and created for illustration. The Act on State Survey and Real Estate Cadastre stipulates that areas are determined in the official map projection but does not mention the need to consider distortions that are inherent in the projection. This article should influence a change in such practice.
