Abstract

This paper presents theoretical research conducted with the aim to introduce and analyse the phenomenon, process and development of the institutional education of teachers in Montenegro, i.e. of their vocational education and further training, in the first place. In order to reach this aim, we started from analysing the working method of first educational institutions for teachers right from their start until the present day. Besides considering certain significant circumstances of and influences on their foundation, work and development, certain plans and programs, based on which they worked, were also partly looked into. Research was done on relevant facts relating to the institutional education of teachers in Montenegro in different historical periods from 1863 until the present day, based on theoretical analysis and historical method. The research showed that teacher education in Montenegro had different forms, transformations and reforms during its continuous development. Each of them has, with its specific aspects, great importance. It was often exposed to numerous political, national, religious, ideological, economic, cultural and pedagogical influences from the neighbouring and other European countries. Over time, it has to a significant extent become modern and compatible with the majority of European models of teacher education.
