School Collections: Their Origins, Function, Meaning

In order to comprehend certain phenomena as clear as possible, it is necessary to look into not only their development, but into what preceded them as well. As far as school collections are concerned, this path leads us to elements contained in the very term, to “a collection” and “collecting” as the common denominator of museology and of the school system and pedagogy, the two fields on the boundary of which school collections may be placed. As a heritage and educational phenomenon, school collections were examined here with regard to their wider historical, museological and pedagogical context, but some concrete examples were researched into as well, out of which the three most common types of school collections were singled out: those that are a result of extraordinary efforts of teachers and professors, collections made by joint efforts of the teaching staff and pupils or collections made within and/or for the needs of certain heritage institutions. Most of the data required for this study were gathered by looking through and examining printed materials, mostly monographs, collected papers and magazines. The remaining data were gathered by browsing through relevant web-sources (mostly official publications of individual schools or museums) or by downloading documents from them, by e-mailing inquiries about school collections to certain museums based on oral or written instructions. This study aims at researching into the time, conditions and reasons for making school collections, at determining their meaning for schools and museums and showing in what ways their function may be changed.
