Teacher Education in Čakovec: Historical, Social and Pedagogical Aspects (1879-1963)

This paper deals with teacher education within the scope of the Čakovec Teacher Training School (Učiteljska škola) throughout the entire period of its existence and operation, i.e. from 1879 until 1963. Established by the Hungarian state authorities, it remained under their influence until the end of the First World War. After Međimurje joined the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, the school started operating in the language and spirit of Croatia. During the period between two world wars, it was under an increasing pressure of the Yugoslav centralism and unitarianism. During the Second World War, the Teacher Training School and the entire Međimurje Region were annexed to Hungary. After the war, however, it once again became a Croatian Teacher Training School. The wish to raise the level of education of future teachers led to the end of its operation since a higher level substitute, namely the Teacher Training College (Pedagoška akademija), was established in 1961. Međimurje, and together with it the Čakovec Teacher Training School, passed through several different political and social periods, which is why the paper includes a parallel analysis of the internal structure of the school in the mentioned periods. In addition to the analysis of the trends related to the number of pupils, the paper analyses the gender structure of the school, the regional and social origins of the students, their native languages and nationalities, religion, as well as the achieved success and behaviour. The changes affecting the mentioned categories are in fact the reflections of the political, social and educational changes affecting the Teacher Training School within the scope of its narrow and wider environment. They also enable one to follow through them the development of the Čakovec Teacher Training School and the evolution of teacher education.
