Public Education in Zabok from 1874 until 1914

Abstract
The aim of this article is to present the development of elementary education in Zabok. In this article, the emphasis is put on the period from 1874 until 1914 and it talks about the circumstances in which the Zabok public school was established and operated, about the progress and partial laymenisation of the school operating in accordance with the educational standards of Croatia Proper (Banska Hrvatska) set forth under the Mažuranić Law, while using the school Commemorative Booklet as the main source. The article deals with the lives of teachers and teacheresses, their education and impact on the life of the community, education of children and peasants, the role of the school patron, school attendance, equipping of the library and garden cultivation. The Zabok school fits into the general picture of the 19th century educational system in Croatia Proper with respect to the period of establishment, number of pupils, share of female pupils, as well as the position of teachers. In terms of education, it proved a successful school that managed to exceed its rural significance. It is a fact that the elementary school played an important role in the development of Zabok in both the educational and material sense. Its contribution to raising the level of literacy equals its contribution to raising the level of knowledge about agricultural cultures, hygiene maintenance and health, as well as its contribution to the promotion of altruistic relationships, which is especially noticeable in the humanitarian activities carried out by the school and the entire town at the beginning of the First World War. The school contributed to the development of the entire town and the surrounding area, and was an indicator of the development of the society of Croatia Proper as a whole, which was in fact the goal of the Mažuranić reform.
