Sažetak

To mark the 150th birthday anniversary of John Dewey, the article addresses his pedagogical thought and practice arising from contemplation of education as a life need of individuals and the social state of society. The basic source of J. Dewey’s pedagogy is in the philosophy of pragmatism that has a multilayer social quality, so it is no wonder it was in line with the era of the industrial revolution and economic crises in the USA from the late 19th century throughout the first half of the 20th century. This is why it reflects problems typical of the views of a philosopher who approaches pedagogical issues from the following point of view: directions of educational objectives, the relation between the value system and natural development of man, moral education and education for democracy, the relation between work and leisure, didactic positivism and education for professions, as well as the project/research and experiential teaching intensively developed by Dewey (together with his wife) as the manager of the Experimental School in Chicago. Dewey is a representative of reformist pedagogy at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, but differently than perceived in the European context. He interpreted his general concept of education as a democratic social act as follows: everyone should be enabled to develop their individuality in accordance with the requirements of the social environment. He did not, like his transatlantic contemporaries in Europe, divide such social content of life into a spiritual (Gaudig) and/or a manual (Kerschensteiner) directions in the formation of a ‘’usable citizen “. This is why, according to him, both teaching and education should be based on experience and implemented in workshops, laboratories, nature, libraries and other school environments. According to J. Oelkers (2009), due to his comprehensive pedagogical thought and work, Dewey was the most popular representative of a new pedagogy and and person of intellectual greatness in this time as a philosopher, along with psychologist J. Piaget.
