Abstract
The author analyzed the problem of continuity and discontinuity between old and new school and their pedagogies in the pupils’ activity area. In the research the relevant literature and sources were analyzed through: school rules, laws and teaching basics between 1774 and 1914. He identified pupils’ activity in the old school through: special subjects of practical character, out school form of school gardens and teaching principle. Pupils’ activity in the continuity of the old school could be noticed from manual-practical to pedagogic orientation. Although the new school was trying to distance itself from the old in all its forms and appearances we can still find the remains of the pupils’ activity in: basic teaching principle, practical works, experiments, systematic observation and recording and also in implementation of initial technique of intellectual work. The new school more audaciously emphasized pupils’ activity (to self-activity) through various forms depending on understanding of the term activity. In the new school a teacher loses the function of an organizer, realizer and authority and becomes an associate and a helper. The subject - hour system was abolished and classes receive different forms of concentrated-globalized classes. Within the old existing paradigm the activity can be monitored in its continuity, and changed paradigm is looking for more radical changes, which is seen as discontinuity where you can still fi nd the traces of the old.
