Contribution of Antun Cuvaj to the historical overview of the development of the pedagogical education, training and professional development of Croatian teachers

Abstract

One of the key factors in evaluating education system is a teacher – his or her education, status... There are a lot of sources about this topic, which are not sorted or used. The first, very meager information on (un) educated or (non) existing forms of education of Croatian teachers give the works of pedagogical authors of the 19th century (Vukotinović, 1844; Novotny, 1867; Tićak, 1880; Basariček, 1881; Modec, 1885; Kirin, 1886; Štiglić, 1893). In the first 50 years of Napredak out of almost 600 articles on teachers, a small part is about their education and training. The greatest contribution to this topic, due to a large scale of valuable information, is ‘Documents for the history of education system in the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia from the earliest times until today’ – especially second edition (1910 – 1913), in 11 volumes and 7186 pages. Among many different today partially unavailable resources which he used he mostly gives the list of printed works with (in) complete bibliographic information; the analysis found more than 2300 bibliographic units. Almost one forth of the content of the ‘Materials’ is related to the education of teachers. Content analysis included six different categories (stages and development segments):
- teachers before initiating pre-institutionalized teachers’ education
- pre-institutionalized education of teachers
- institutionalized education of teachers
- professional training of teachers
- professional trips
- magazines, books and handbooks for education and professional training of teachers
The results confirm the contribution of ‘Materials’ to the complete historical overview of the development (in all categories) of the teachers’ education (from the earliest times until 1913) as well as its contribution to the development of Croatian history of pedagogy and school system.
