Sažetak

The paper presents some of the development of primary and secondary schools in Zagreb. The records kept by the State Archives were used as source material. My wish was to show the signifi cance of archive records as the most important source for studying the life of a city. The paper shows the beginning of schools in Zagreb, their development, position and infl uence on social life of the city. City government was deeply involved in the development of school, as well as humanitarian associations (laic or religious) and, in a way, all inhabitants of the city. We know that the progress of a city is most clearly reflected in the literacy of its inhabitants, and the latter can be discerned from the number of schools. We may, therefore, conclude that the city of Zagreb was the city with the highest literacy in this region in mid–20th century. Until mid–20th century, schools were predominantly managed by the Church. With the development and strengthening of capitalist economy and sudden increase in the administrative staff , a fundamental reorganisation in education took place. Schools could no longer be individual effort, or effort of individual institutions in the emerging society; the education in liberal arts they provided was not enough and the rapidly developing natural sciences had to be introduced into curricula. Schools were taken over by the state, which means that they became public and general institutions. The records of schools in the city of Zagreb (kept at the State Archives) date back to that period, and we need to know the development of school administration, certain types of schools, as well as schools regulations, organisation of schools, their method of work and management.
