Sažetak
As a school institution and pedagogical category school farms were started in 19th century. The official statistics shows that school farms were started for the Croatian Military Border since 1816. At first the work of the school farms was controlled by the regulations and directions of administrative and school authorities but they were not compulsory until the School Act. By the first School Act (passed in 1871. for the Croatian Military Border and in 1874. for the Civil Croatia) school farms became compulsory for all primary schools in Croatia. Besides the fact, there were schools that never had school farms and their percentage was somewhere between 72 and 80 per cent.
At the beginning school farms were started next to boarding schools and orphanages as an economic category. In the course of time they obtained even more explicit pedagogical function and together with other school factors they helped the development of a harmonious personality. School farms played a really positive part in the development of working skills.
