Abstract

The article aims to clarify the interconnection between character education and culture, as well as the influence they exert on each other. Starting from the definition of character education by Thomas Lickona, the founder of modern character education theory, the article explores the place and concept of character education in contemporary education, emphasizing the complementarity of ethical and character education, and a holistic and integrated approach that promotes moral values, ethics, and social competencies as components of cultural values. Culturally responsive teaching has created space for itself with the goal of highlighting the necessity of preparing students for life in a globalized world and explaining its role in connecting character education and culture. In order to encourage discussion on the relationship between ethical, character, and culturally responsive teaching, the final part of the article proposes key outcomes for all three educational approaches for elementary and secondary schools as well as for universities.
