Abstract

In the last decade, a new cultural and scientific epistemology of metamodernism has become increasingly propulsive, which seeks to resolve the crisis in which the postmodernist paradigm has found itself since the late 1990s. By blending the optimism and purposefulness of modernism with the caution and skepticism of postmodernism, metamodernism seeks to point to new ways of understanding a world that daily grapples with new obstacles such as the development of artificial intelligence, migration to the West, new wars, the possibility of a new bipolar order between the United States and China, cultural wars, etc. The features of metamodernism are therefore worth studying together with the contemporary context within which they develop. In order to do so, this paper will also look back at the earlier epistemes from which metamodernism developed, questioning the possibility of metamodernism itself and its usefulness in science.
