The impact of lighting on the workers' strain in the garment industry

Abstract

In the garment sewing industry the workers need a high level of visual concentration when working with fabrics of different sizes, nuances and colours, in order to pay attention to details and parts, and to differentiate between colours and contrasts. Proper lighting of the workplaces improves productivity and quality of the work while reducing the risk of impaired vision in the workers. The paper studies the intensity of lighting in the sewing process in real production situations observed in two sewing plants. General lighting and additional lighting for individual workplaces is considered. The results indicate that in the sewing production plant organised according to HRN EN 12464-1:2021 the general lighting is insufficient, whereas in the combined use of general and additional lighting the values are too high. This finding requires that additional lighting be set up in a more appropriate fashion.
