Abstract

This paper examines the history of the Angelo Cecon Foundation Agricultural School
in Vodnjan/Dignano, Istria, from its founding in the early 1900s to the years preceding
the Second World War, with particular attention to its most successful period in
the late 1930s. The Agricultural School was established by the benefactor Angelo
Cecon (Vodnjan/Dignano, 1830-1873), through whose efforts the inhabitants of
Vodnjan/Dignano and Istria benefitted from two important institutions: The Angelo
Cecon Foundation Hospital and The Angelo Cecon Foundation Agricultural School.
The establishment of these two institutions, recorded by Angelo Cecon in his will,
solved the issue of providing healthcare to the poor and elderly of Vodnjan/Dignano
for fifty years, in addition to providing education to its farmers. Some of the school’s
founding documents shape the narrative, such as the Founding Act of 1903, the
Royal Decree of 1925 whereby the school was established during the period of
Italian administration, the Organic and Disciplinary Regulations of 1926 and the
Internal Regulations of 1927.
