Abstract

The article analyses the image of “home” in the prose of Sophia Yablonska as the embodiment of the idea of the need for roots in the modern culture of the 20th century. Based on travelogues published in the 1930s, it explores the dynamics of the idea of home as a space of both personal and collective self-identification, and as a kind of message of involvement and belonging. At the same time, the journey is interpreted as a path of return and discovery, a movement not only in a heterogeneous cultural space, but also in the historical time of radical events capable of changing the status of the traveller to the status of an exile, fugitive, and emigrant.
