Abstract

The aim of this paper is to clarify the meaning of the concept of persona in popular music studies, highlight the importance of its study, and expand the theory of persona. I will analyze in detail the ideas of Theodore Gracyk, Philip Auslander, and Jerrold Levinson. First, the paper will point out the value of Gracyk’s understanding of popular music and his contextualist theoretical framework. It will then explain how Auslander’s theory of persona builds upon Gracyk’s and elaborate on the different conception Levinson has in mind, as well as examine its potential complementarity with the others. Finally, I will use popular examples to illustrate how the concept of persona is applied and why it is important for the future understanding of popular music.
