Abstract

This paper addresses one of the key challenges in school mathematics education – understanding fractions as non-negative rational numbers. It highlights the problems arising from misconceptions about fractions as parts of a whole, often caused by a lack of diversity in teaching methods. The paper provides examples of tasks and strategies that can clarify misunderstandings and foster a deeper understanding of fractions. Emphasis is placed on the importance of visualization, practical examples, and a flexible approach to help students transition from simple to more complex concepts of fractions.
