Abstract

Adolescence is a vulnerable period full of pressures and decisions, important
for the acquisition of health habits that predict health and general well-being
later in life. The new theory, Webs of Support, emphasizes the importance of
a supportive social network for young people during this period. It particularly
emphasizes the role of supportive adults who are recognized in various formal
and informal contexts. The paper presents the role and function of support,
along with guidelines for further research in this area. Particular emphasis is
placed on obstacles to seeking support for young people, as well as guidelines
on how to better prepare young people and the community they are part
of to empower seeking support. In conclusion, questions are raised for the
Croatian context in terms of the availability and adaptability of a wider support
network for young people and how they can help promote and protect health
in young people.
