Abstract

The research was initiated by the 120th anniversary of the Croatian National Movement of 1903, which also took place on the territory of the local government of Bakar. The aim was to detect the role of the local residents and residents of Bakar’s environs in the circumstances of the parliamentary crisis of the Austrian part of the Dual Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, which spilt over into the Hungarian part of the Monarchy. Riots broke out against the ban and Hungarianisation in Croatian regions. The research conducted into the riots in Bakar and the surroundings that took place in May 1903 is based on the analysis of original materials from the State Archives in Rijeka and the press of that time, primarily the Riječki novi list newspaper. Numerous pieces have been published in historiography about the aforementioned events, but only very few have touched upon the events in Bakar and its surroundings. Therefore, this contribution is significant due to the reconstruction of the atmosphere at the local level within the general national Croatian context.
